I'm pretty sure there is a walkway proposed over West Street to the state parking garage and then over Maryland to connect to the Conv Ctr, in addition to the one mentioned over Washington. Nonetheless, I think not planning for, and encouraging, activity at street level is short-sighted when anticipating 1,500+ hotel rooms sandwiched between the CC & White River State Park.Idyllic Indyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11116033952418307045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584765419821827412.post-38832532703308337122008-05-10T12:55:00.000-07:002008-05-10T12:55:00.000-07:00Thanks for the correction, thundermutt -- you're j...Thanks for the correction, thundermutt -- you're just chock-full of information!

Don't forget, though, that they're planning a raised walkway connector from the hotel complex over Washington to the museum area and the canal. Not that that should preclude reasonable sidewalks around the complex, but at least they are aware of the importance of that connection.

It's difficult to see, but my guess is that the curved, light gray line at the top of the siteplan (just left of center) is an estimate for that walkway. If so, they're probably trying to line it up with the pedestrian bridge over the canal near the NCAA Headquarters.CorrNDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15371462855078578516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584765419821827412.post-38286322870290428572008-05-10T07:26:00.000-07:002008-05-10T07:26:00.000-07:00CorrND, north of the Legion Mall (i.e. outside the...CorrND, north of the Legion Mall (i.e. outside the original Mile Square) the sidewalks are most commonly 6 feet wide.

I'm guessing that the hotel planners are assuming that no one will venture out that side of the complex. I think they're wrong, as that is the most convenient access point to the Canal and all its attractions.

A really strong sidewalk connection from the hotels' front doors to the light at Schumacher Way is essential. And that means a 10-15' sidewalk with a landscape buffer to traffic on Washington.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-584765419821827412.post-46393880149421798542008-05-09T11:13:00.000-07:002008-05-09T11:13:00.000-07:00Nice writeup. I'm pretty sure 8' sidewalks is the minimum around the city but I think you're right, most downtown sidewalks are significantly larger, I'm guessing 12-16'.

The MDC Staff report included a south elevation, though it's just the JW-M and the ballroom (maybe the current Courtyard is in there, but the diagram is kind of a mess). It's tough to tell, but the ballroom looks to be in the 5-6 story range so the Courtyard/Springhill building will definitely be visible from Victory Field. I pulled it out of the report so you can check it out here.

I've also got an uber hi-res version of the siteplan if you (or anybody) is curious. I don't even remember where I got it from. There's not too much more to be gleaned from the larger version, but it does look nice. No one is going to see them from West or Washington!

The regional center approval process will probably eliminate those signs, as the planners don't much like box signs downtown. (Neither do I.)

The curious thing is, they're not "cheap", just cheap-looking.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
